| AH...THE DECK AT PETROLIA PALMS! |
| Not much to do and every reason to be there |
As I write this blog, I think of several recent phone calls with folks who are planning their first trek to the Lost Coast and Petrolia. Folks new to the area, but keen to go there, always ask the questions, what is there to do? where is there to hike? and how do I find mountain bike trails and last but not least, does Petrolia have a website?
That question reminds me of the couple who once asked about all of the above and then some, mentioned plans to visit far-away lands such as Ferndale, Eureka and Arcata, using Petrolia Palms as their base. I had suggested that if they needed further help in their day-to-day plan making, they could contact me by phone once they arrived in what we locals affectionately call "P-town." I heard nothing from them and figured all was well.
Following their visit, I received an email. After extolling the virtues of Petrolia's pristine beauty, they told me they spent the first two days sitting on the deck, listening to the creek below and reading. Finally on the third day, they risked everything and ventured the few miles down the road to the Petrolia Store, wandered around the few lanes, figured they had trekked enough for the day, and hit Petrolia Palm's deck once again. Ah the life. They have returned each year since then.
It is truly one of the best things about Petrolia, that there is nothing formal nor organized about it. There are no trails to hike, nor paths to ride nor movie theaters in which to munch popcorn. But make no mistake, there is a wonderful world of walks along the mighty Mattole, strolls along the magnificent Pacific Ocean (oh what a sunset on oh what a beach-just down the end of Lighthouse Road), bike rides along the river, chats with local folks at the well-stocked Petrolia store (don't miss the store bulletin board) or picking up produce at the local stand (where honor rules with the drop box). And then of course, there is just sitting on the deck. |
